OAU Zookeeper Killed By Lion He Nursed For Nine Years

A veterinary technologist, Olabode Olawuyi today lost his life to a lion at the OAU zoo, plunging the university community into grief.

The school’s spokesman Abiodun Olarewaju said the lion this afternoon, attacked the victim, who had been overseeing the Zoological garden for more than 10 years, as he was feeding the wild cat and its companions in their den.

The staff who witnessed the attack tried their best to save the technologist but the lion had already inflicted fatal injuries, Olarewaju said.

The Vice-Chancellor Adebayo Simeon Bamire and his management team rushed to the scene upon hearing the terrible news.

When they got there, the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji told the Vice-Chancellor that the victim could not be saved despite all the medical interventions

The lion that caused this tragedy was put down.

Olawuyi had been looking after the lions since they were born on the campus about nine years ago but, sadly, the male lion took his life.

The university management has visited the bereaved family, urging them to find comfort in God who is the giver and taker of life.


The Vice-Chancellor Bamire has also ordered a thorough investigation into the causes of the incident.
