The U.S. warship USS Milius made a “routine” transit through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, April 16, just a few days after China ended its most recent invasion war games on the island.
China, which considers Taiwan to be its own territory, officially came to an end on Monday, April 10, after conducting precision strikes and blockades of Taiwan for three days.
The drills were organized by China to communicate outrage at Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen’s gathering with U.S. Place of Delegates Speaker Kevin McCarthy, seeing it as an impedance in China’s inside issues and U.S. support for Taiwan’s different character from China.
China has always used force to take control of Taiwan, which is democratically governed.
Taiwan’s administration dismisses China’s regional cases, and says just the islanders’ can choose their future.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Milius made a “routine Taiwan Strait transit” through waters “where high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law,” according to the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet on Monday, April 17.
In a post on social media on Monday, the Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese military stated that it had organized troops to follow and monitor the US destroyer throughout its operation.
The United States Navy regularly carries out similar freedom of navigation missions in the disputed South China Sea as well as sails warships through the Taiwan strait about once per month.
